Winter Chill Returns

After a couple days above freezing, well into the 40's F yesterday today felt very chilly indeed. The day started in the teens and didn't make it above freezing. Because we had a very rainy day followed by a day of much snow melting this left a lot of water to freeze up. The bricks I leave in front of the coop door at night were frozen to the ground. This resulted in a still sleepy me trying to bash things against the big bricks to free them from each other and the ground! The birds could hear me and were making a ruckus, probably wondering what on earth was taking me so long to open their doors and why I was making such a racket!

A bit of early morning brick bashing.

Once in I found Miss Silkie harboring an illegal egg and had to take it from her. She is so persistent in her sitting that she doesn't notice she is being covered in shavings. She got up in an irritated mood after i took her prize. Soon Miss Silkie, maybe soon.

Silkie getting a bit buried in shavings.

Ah she was harboring illegal goods, an egg!
The birds didn't mind the colder weather but I did so went through my outdoor morning chores as fast as possible. Water check, food check, any sap in the buckets- just a trickle. Then back in the house for KitKat and I. Replaced ducks water mid day since it was getting frozen and say birds happily going about their day.

Hello there, how does our hair look today?

The birds enjoying their paths that were made yesterday. They don't like to walk on snow.

I didn't do anything too exciting indoors. Made dinner, did some geography homeschool work with Tristan, entered a Baker Creek Seeds contest on facebook but didn't win, did an overabundance of dishes and repaired a kerosene space heater. The days are getting longer and I was able to wait until nearly 5:30 to shut up the birds.

Fat happy Hens and Mo the Rooster look so sweet when they're sleeping.
Looks like we'll have another warm up tomorrow maybe the maple sap will be running better then.
